The Acropolis of Athens, and the Parthenon in particular, is the most iconic monument of the Ancient Greek civilisation and are universal symbols of the classical spirit. It is the symbol of democracy and it also symbolises the beginning of Western civilisation and stands as the icon of European culture. The Parthenon was dedicated to Athena Parthenos, the patron goddess of the city of Athens and goddess of wisdom. In 2009 the new Acropolis Museum opened to the public, offering the optimal museum space for the exhibition of all the Acropolis sculptures in direct view of the actual monument. The Acropolis Museum is a purpose-built museum just a 5-minute walk from the actual archaeological site of the Acropolis.
