It is noteworthy that according to recent paleontological research, the species of fish caught by fishermen in the Aegean islands 10.000 years ago are almost the same as those caught by coastal fishermen today. Nowadays, coastal fishing continues to maintain special social and economic importance in Greece, representing 97% of the Greek fishing fleet and accounting for about 50% of the catches. Greece has developed a large aquaculture sector, representing a major share of national seafood production. Agriculture is the practise of cultivating plants and livestock. Agriculture in Greece is based on small, family-owned dispersed units.
